Theo James’ Eddie Horniman is a very different man by the end of The Gentlemen Season 2.
When the Netflix series began, Eddie was a reluctant aristocrat who inherited his family’s estate and discovered that his late father had been involved in a huge marijuana operation. His initial goal was simple: protect his family and find a way out of the criminal business.
Season 2 takes that character in a much darker direction.
Eddie expands his criminal empire into Italy, falls in love with an Italian countess, loses her in a devastating attack and ultimately discovers that his own brother was involved in the chain of events that led to the violence.
The finale ends with Eddie forcing Freddy to kill Gospel John in one of the season’s most brutal scenes.
Speaking about the ending, James said the story is designed to explore how privilege and power can gradually destroy a person’s moral boundaries.
And with Season 3 already renewed, Eddie’s transformation is far from over.
What happens at the end of The Gentlemen Season 2?
The Season 2 finale reveals that Eddie’s biggest betrayal came from inside his own family.
Earlier in the season, Eddie marries Countess Isabella “Bella” Soranza de Parme, an Italian aristocrat who has connections to the criminal world but does not want to live that life herself.
Their relationship appears to give Eddie both emotional stability and greater power within his expanding international operation.
But that happiness does not last.
After their wedding at Lake Maggiore, Bella pilots a seaplane while Eddie travels separately below. A hidden bomb explodes on the aircraft, killing Bella.
Eddie is devastated and initially suspects that one of his criminal rivals could be responsible.
The truth is much closer to home.
Who killed Bella in The Gentlemen Season 2?
The finale connects Bella’s death to Eddie’s older brother Freddy.
Freddy has been staying at a religious rehabilitation center, where he becomes influenced by Gospel John, a criminal figure connected to the events of Season 1.
Gospel John exploits Freddy’s resentment toward Eddie and his frustration over losing the family inheritance.
Freddy eventually becomes involved in an attack on the Halstead estate, where Eddie’s family is placed in danger.
Once Eddie discovers Freddy’s involvement, he decides that his brother has to face a punishment — but he stops short of killing him.
That decision leads directly to the shocking final scene.
Why does Eddie make Freddy kill Gospel John?
Rather than murdering Freddy himself, Eddie creates a punishment that forces his brother to take responsibility for the violence he helped set in motion.
Eddie captures Gospel John and has Freddy brought to him.
Freddy is then forced to kill Gospel John with a chainsaw.
The scene leaves Freddy covered in blood while Eddie watches and smokes a cigar.
Eddie’s final attitude toward his brother is chilling. He calls Freddy a “good boy” after the killing.
The moment demonstrates just how far Eddie has moved from the morally conflicted character viewers met in Season 1.
He still refuses to kill his own brother.
But he has also become capable of making Freddy commit an extremely brutal act.
Why has Eddie become so ruthless?
For James, Eddie’s transformation is one of the central themes of the second season.
The actor and co-executive producer described the storyline as an “ascension” story — one in which a privileged man gradually gains more power while losing part of his moral identity.
At the beginning of the series, Eddie is essentially trying to survive in a criminal world that he did not choose.
By Season 2, he realizes that he is actually good at operating within that world.
That changes him.
Eddie begins to believe that achieving the desired result justifies whatever actions are necessary to get there.
One of the key turning points comes when he deliberately commits a crime against a seemingly innocent person to advance his own interests.
James said that moment represents Eddie crossing an important moral line.
The character still sees himself as a good person, but his actions increasingly contradict that belief.
Bella’s death changes Eddie
Bella is more than a romantic subplot in Season 2.
Her relationship with Eddie also reflects the series’ interest in aristocracy, power and strategic marriage.
Eddie and Bella come from worlds where marriage can be connected to family influence, alliances and power.
James said Eddie ultimately does fall in love with Bella, even though their marriage also strengthens his position.
Her death therefore removes both an emotional connection and an important part of Eddie’s expanding world.
It also gives him another reason to pursue revenge.
The show deliberately keeps Eddie’s immediate reaction to Bella’s death mysterious before revealing the next stage of his story.
By the finale, grief has been transformed into something much more dangerous.
What happens to Eddie and Susie?
Despite the chemistry between Eddie and Susie Glass, James does not expect their relationship to become a straightforward romance.
The actor said the creative team initially looked to Moonlighting as a reference point for their dynamic.
Like Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd’s characters in that series, Eddie and Susie can be emotionally connected without necessarily becoming a couple.
Season 2 instead makes their relationship more complicated.
They remain each other’s strongest allies, but they are also moving toward a potential power struggle.
Both characters want greater control, and Eddie’s growing independence creates new tension between them.
James also pointed out the practical class differences between the characters.
Eddie is a duke and member of the British aristocracy, while Susie is the daughter of a gangster who runs a criminal empire.
That makes a long-term romantic relationship far from straightforward.
What does the Season 2 ending mean for The Gentlemen Season 3?
The biggest question going into Season 3 is how much of Eddie’s old identity remains.
James said Eddie is now on a path toward surpassing Bobby as a drug lord.
At the same time, he still has to deal with the consequences of Freddy’s betrayal and Bella’s death.
That creates a potentially dangerous combination.
Eddie has more power than ever, but his moral boundaries have become increasingly difficult to recognize.
The actor said Season 3 will continue exploring how much Eddie has “lost himself” and how far his soul has been corrupted by power.
The world of the show is also expected to expand.
James teased that the next season will move into different countries and a very different setting, although he did not reveal the details.
When will The Gentlemen Season 3 start filming?
Season 3 has already been officially renewed.
James indicated that production is expected to begin relatively soon.
One reason for the faster turnaround is the long gap between the first and second seasons.
The actor said the creative team does not want another extended break if they can avoid it.
Scheduling conflicts contributed to the delay between the first two seasons, with James working on a film and other members of the production having their own commitments.
This time, the team wants to maintain momentum and continue the story without another major gap.
Is Meghan Markle joining The Gentlemen Season 3?
Meghan Markle has been at the center of recent speculation about a possible role in Season 3.
However, James poured cold water on the reports.
Asked about the possibility of the Duchess of Sussex joining the series, he described the reports as “mostly hot air” and questioned how quickly the speculation had grown.
James also pointed to the practical problems that such casting could create.
A major celebrity with that level of public attention could bring enormous media interest, paparazzi attention and logistical complications to the production.
For now, there is no confirmed Meghan Markle casting announcement from the series.

It is that he is becoming the kind of person who can control other people through fear and violence without seeing himself as a villain.
He begins the series wanting to escape the criminal world.
Now he appears determined to rule it.
Bella’s death gives him revenge as a motivation. Freddy’s betrayal gives him a personal enemy within his own family. And his growing rivalry with Susie creates another potential threat from someone who knows him extremely well.
Season 3 therefore has a much darker Eddie Horniman to work with.
The question is no longer whether Eddie can survive the criminal empire.
It is how much of Eddie will remain when he finally controls it.
