Meta Quest 3 Review: Strong VR Gaming, Sharp Display and Short Battery Life
Meta Quest 3 offers a strong mix of VR gaming, mixed reality, work and entertainment, but its roughly two-hour battery life and weaker built-in audio remain notable drawbacks.
The Meta Quest 3 is a standalone mixed-reality and virtual-reality headset designed to handle gaming, entertainment, work and multitasking without requiring a separate computer.
Forbes Vetted rated the headset 4.5 out of 5 after its technology team tested it for more than 50 hours. The testing covered design, comfort, software, performance, display quality, battery life, work, movies and VR gaming.
The review, written by Rebecca Isaacs, consumer technology and electronics editor at Forbes Vetted, was published on September 15, 2026.
During testing, the team also monitored battery performance during mixed use and video playback, including wearing the headset for about an hour at a time.
1. Product and Testing
The Meta Quest 3 is a standalone mixed-reality/VR headset, meaning it can operate without being connected to a separate computer for its core experiences.
Forbes’ testing went beyond a short first impression. The team spent more than 50 hours with the headset, examining its design and comfort as well as its software, performance and display.
Testing also covered practical uses such as work and multitasking, movies and streaming, along with VR gaming. Battery performance was checked during mixed usage and video playback to see how quickly the built-in battery declined during normal use.
The result was a review that looked at the headset as an everyday device rather than only as a gaming accessory.
2. Price and Basic Specifications
The 512GB Meta Quest 3 costs about $599 in the review.
The headset runs on Meta Horizon OS and supports several ways of interacting with its interface. Users can rely on the included controllers, while gestures and pinch controls provide additional options.
Prescription lenses are available through custom orders, and a glasses spacer is included for people who wear glasses.
The Quest 3 has a built-in battery rather than a removable battery system. It weighs about 515 grams, or 1.14 pounds.

3. Design and Comfort
The Quest 3 package includes the headset, two controllers and a glasses spacer.

The controllers are also described as ring-free Touch Plus controllers, with haptic feedback adding physical responses to interactions.
4. Display
The Quest 3 uses a dual LCD display with a resolution of 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, according to the AI Overview information provided for the headset.
It also uses pancake lenses, which help support the headset’s slimmer design.
Forbes testers generally found the colors good and largely true to life. Bright images retained crisp detail, although the display did not reach the image quality associated with OLED screens.

The games generally delivered detailed and smooth graphics.
There was, however, some noticeable jerking when turning with the controller in Batman: Arkham Shadow. The review noted that this type of movement is part of a design approach intended to reduce the potential for motion sickness.
First Encounters provided a particularly strong demonstration of the Quest 3’s passthrough technology.
The headset can register the user’s physical environment and make the gameplay respond to that space. Instead of keeping the real room completely separate from the virtual experience, passthrough can make the physical environment part of the game.

Battery life also becomes more noticeable during longer viewing sessions. Forbes found the battery sufficient for about 90 minutes of movie watching, but longer cinematic sessions expose the headset’s battery limitation.
The review considered Apple’s Vision Pro more capable as a cinematic experience, while also noting that Apple’s headset costs considerably more.
8. Battery and Controllers
Battery life is one of the clearest limitations of the Meta Quest 3.

The plastic construction and strap adjustment were additional areas that some testers did not particularly like.

For people primarily seeking the most cinematic viewing experience possible, however, the review does not position the Quest 3 as the strongest fit.
