A hitman story with a very different center
Latif is introduced in brutal fashion, killing a man in a public restroom with a sword before methodically cleaning the scene. But the film immediately complicates the image of the professional killer.
His cleanup kit includes ordinary parenting supplies such as diapers and wet wipes.
At home, Latif is responsible for teenager Fatiha, eight-year-old Qadir and infant Aziza. He keeps his criminal life hidden from them, even as the pressures surrounding his work become increasingly difficult to contain.
The death of his wife changes his priorities. Latif decides that he needs to leave the killing business behind and become a better father.
There is an obvious problem: killing is the skill that earns him money.

Tariq makes Latif’s refusal to use firearms a major part of the action design.
The result is a film where swords repeatedly collide with the guns and other weapons used by his opponents. Variety praised the combat sequences for their choreography and clarity, while Deadline found the film considerably more subdued overall.
The action is not presented simply as a series of rapidly edited explosions. Latif’s movements remain readable, giving the fights a physical, almost balletic quality.
A major confrontation at a lavish mansion pushes the concept to an intentionally heightened extreme, with Latif facing an enormous armed group.
John Cho takes the film somewhere stranger
John Cho plays Pastor Hwan Yoon, a Korean-American pastor and former Marine whose religious movement combines aggressive patriotism with an intense attachment to guns.
He becomes involved in the conflict surrounding Haddy and sex worker Fugazi, played by Tiffany Boone.
The contrast between Latif’s Islamic faith and Hwan Yoon’s version of Christianity gives Tariq room to explore religion through the conventions of an action movie rather than through a traditional religious drama.
The two reviews differ somewhat on how successfully this works.
Variety viewed the film’s treatment of faith as one of its strengths, while Deadline felt that the Pastor’s exaggerated presence created a tonal shift that weakened the movie’s more grounded first half.

The film’s visual world shifts between Latif’s cramped, overheated Texas environment and the brighter, more heightened spaces surrounding Pastor Hwan Yoon.
That contrast is part of the movie’s personality, although it is also where the reviews diverge most sharply. Variety found the film’s genre fusion exhilarating, while Deadline considered some of its tonal changes less successful.
