Spider-Man: Brand New Day Hits $900M and Eyes All-Time Box Office Record
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed $900 million at the domestic box office and is expected to remain No. 1 for a sixth consecutive weekend, putting the Marvel film within striking distance of the all-time U.S. record.
Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached another major box-office milestone, becoming only the second movie in history to cross $900 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office.
The Tom Holland-led superhero film reached the milestone in 36 days, faster than Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took 50 days to reach $900 million in 2015.
That leaves Brand New Day chasing the next major target: The Force Awakens’ all-time domestic record of about $936.6 million.
Spider-Man expected to stay No. 1
The film is also projected to dominate the Labor Day weekend box office for a sixth straight weekend.
Industry estimates cited by The Hollywood Reporter put Brand New Day at roughly $22 million over the four-day holiday frame. Deadline, meanwhile, projected a weekend in the range of about $18 million.
Either result would be enough to keep the Marvel blockbuster at the top of the domestic chart, with relatively limited competition during the final weekend of summer.
The film finished its fifth weekend with about $30.4 million, bringing its domestic total to roughly $899.7 million before crossing the $900 million mark.
How close is Spider-Man to the domestic record?
The next milestone is now clearly in sight.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains the unadjusted domestic box-office leader with approximately $936.6 million. Brand New Day needs roughly another $36 million to overtake that figure.
If its current pace holds, the Marvel film could become the highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office without adjusting for inflation.
The achievement would give Tom Holland’s Spider-Man another major place in box-office history after the film already became the second movie to pass $900 million domestically.
Global box office is also massive
The movie’s success is not limited to North America.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has generated roughly $2.33 billion worldwide and has moved into the top tier of the all-time global box office rankings. Recent industry reporting places it ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water, leaving only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame above it.
The film’s current worldwide total is reported at more than $2.3 billion, although box-office databases can show slightly different figures depending on when international grosses are updated.
‘The Odyssey’ remains No. 2
Tom Holland is also starring in the weekend’s second-biggest movie.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which features Holland alongside Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, is expected to take second place with around $16 million over the four-day frame.
That would push the Universal epic to roughly $588 million domestically.
The two films have therefore given Holland an unusual presence at the top of the box-office chart at the same time, with Brand New Day leading and The Odyssey following.
‘By Any Means’ and ‘Onslaught’ open behind
The weekend’s new releases are arriving far behind the two major holdovers.
Paramount’s By Any Means, directed by Elegance Bratton and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg, earned about $725,000 from Thursday previews. The true-story-inspired crime drama is projected to finish the four-day weekend with roughly $6 million to $8 million.
A24’s Onslaught, directed by Adam Wingard and starring Adria Arjona, Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens and Drew Starkey, earned about $275,000 from previews. It is expected to finish the weekend in the $5 million-$7 million range.
Neither newcomer is currently expected to seriously challenge Brand New Day for the top spot.
Spider-Man’s next box-office target
The immediate question is no longer whether Brand New Day can reach $900 million. It has already done that.
The bigger question is whether Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man movie can pass The Force Awakens and claim the domestic box-office record.
With the film already above $900 million and continuing to lead the chart deep into its theatrical run, the gap to the record has become relatively small.
For Sony and Marvel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now competing not just for another weekend victory, but for a place at the very top of the domestic box-office history.
