Perez Hilton’s Recovery Takes a Mental-Health Turn as Family Reveals Broken Bones and Unresolved Questions
Perez Hilton’s latest hospitalization update goes beyond his physical injuries: his family says doctors are now preparing to focus more closely on the mental-health crisis behind the Aug. 4 incident, while the cause of what his brother-in-law called a “mental break” remains unclear.
Perez Hilton’s recovery has entered a new phase nearly three weeks after he was hospitalized following an alarming TikTok livestream from his Miami home. His brother-in-law, Tom, said Monday that Hilton has spent much of the hospitalization being treated for physical injuries, including multiple broken bones sustained during falls that night.
The new information provides a fuller picture of the severity of the incident. According to Tom, Hilton’s injuries were more extensive than initially understood, and doctors also discovered other medical issues connected to his earlier battle with severe sepsis.
Physical recovery revealed to be more serious
Hilton, 48, was hospitalized on Aug. 4 after authorities responded to the livestream. He was treated for significant blood loss, an overdose and other injuries before being taken for inpatient care under Florida’s Baker Act, which permits temporary involuntary detention when someone is considered a danger to themselves or others during a mental-health crisis.
His family had previously said that the injuries required surgery and that his recovery would be a long process. Tom has now revealed that Hilton also fell several times during the night, resulting in broken bones.
Speaking on The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker, Tom said that Hilton had continued receiving treatment for his physical injuries until shortly before the podcast recording.
The development means the hospitalization has involved considerably more than the injuries that were initially publicly known. Tom also said doctors found unrelated medical problems connected to Hilton’s previous sepsis episode.
The bigger unanswered question is what triggered the crisis
While Hilton’s physical condition has been receiving medical attention, his family says the deeper question — what caused the mental-health crisis — remains unanswered.
Tom said psychiatrists have been checking on Hilton while he has been receiving physical treatment, but the more intensive focus on his mental health is only now beginning.
“The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break,” Tom said, has not yet been established.
That uncertainty is important because speculation has circulated online about whether Hilton could have experienced so-called sepsis psychosis following his earlier illness. However, Tom emphasized that there has been no official diagnosis establishing that explanation.
At this stage, there is therefore no confirmed medical explanation for what led to the Aug. 4 crisis.
Hilton is described as lucid, but his memory of the incident is unclear
Tom said Hilton is currently “lucid,” offering one of the clearest updates yet on his present state.
However, the family has deliberately avoided repeatedly discussing the events of Aug. 4 with him. Tom said he does not know how much Hilton remembers from that night and does not want conversations about the incident to trigger additional anxiety while he is recovering.
The family is instead trying to give Hilton space before the focus turns more fully toward his mental health.
That transition could become the most significant part of his recovery because there is currently no confirmed timeline for when he will complete treatment or leave the hospital.
Why Hilton’s earlier sepsis matters to his recovery
The latest hospitalization also comes only months after Hilton experienced a serious medical emergency of his own.
In March 2026, Hilton was hospitalized in Las Vegas with severe sepsis after taking flu medication on an empty stomach for about a week. The illness led to a stomach ulcer, perforation and sepsis, requiring emergency surgery and extensive hospital treatment.
He spent 21 days in the hospital.
Following that experience, Hilton moved to Miami, where he had family and close friends nearby. Tom said the move was not completely out of character for Hilton because of that support network, although Hilton reportedly regretted the decision soon after arriving.
The connection between his earlier physical illness and his latest mental-health crisis remains uncertain. His family has not said that sepsis caused the Aug. 4 incident, and no such diagnosis has been confirmed.
His children remain part of the recovery process
Hilton’s hospitalization has also affected his three children, Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8.
They were living with Hilton and his mother in Miami and were at the home shortly before the Aug. 4 livestream. His sister discovered what was happening and the children, along with other family members, left the property.
Hilton has not seen his children since the incident because they are not permitted in the section of the hospital where he is receiving treatment.
His mother, Teresita Lavandeira, subsequently sought temporary custody of the children. A court granted her temporary custody on Aug. 18, while Hilton was given supervised visitation subject to psychiatric clearance.
Tom said Hilton’s family has emphasized to him that his children love him and that he has been a present father.
The family is limiting Hilton’s exposure while he recovers
The hospital environment itself is currently structured around Hilton’s recovery rather than his public career.
According to Tom, Hilton has no electronics in his hospital room. Instead, he calls family members from the nurse’s station.
That detail reflects the extent to which his current treatment has moved away from the public-facing world that has defined much of his career.
Tom said Hilton still has love for the entertainment industry, but how he will continue engaging with that part of his life — and what coping strategies will be appropriate—will need to be addressed during his recovery.
For now, there is no timeline for his return.
