Carolyn Miller never planned to become a country singer.
The New York native had studied musical theater and was pursuing acting when a few casual YouTube covers unexpectedly began attracting an audience. Then, in 2018, a shoutout from Meghan Trainor gave her online following a major boost — and pushed her toward a career she had never planned.
Miller, 37, recently recalled the turning point during an appearance on The Dory Jackson Interview series.
At the time, she still considered herself an actress.
Miller Originally Wanted to Be an Actress
Miller had spent years working in show business, including theater, television and film. Her official biography says she is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music and had worked professionally from a young age.
After college, however, she found herself with more free time between auditions.
Instead of simply waiting for her next acting opportunity, Miller began uploading song covers to YouTube.
She initially viewed the videos as something to do when she was bored.
But the response surprised her.
People began following her and asking when she would release original music.
For Miller, that was difficult to understand because she still saw herself primarily as an actress.

Miller recalled waking up to find that she had gained about 3,000 Facebook followers overnight.
That moment made her realize that something bigger could be developing.
She had not set out to build a music career, but suddenly there was an audience waiting to hear more.
The Shoutout Pushed Miller Toward Country Music
Rather than treating the new attention as a temporary boost, Miller decided to learn how the music business worked.
She began studying the industry and focused particularly on country music, the genre she had always enjoyed.
She also started spending time in Nashville.
Miller described observing live performances and taking notes on everything from how artists structured their sets to when they moved between upbeat songs and ballads.
The process was essentially a crash course in becoming a professional musician.
Her career gradually developed “brick by brick” and “month by month,” according to her account.
From YouTube Covers to a Country Career
Miller eventually established herself as an independent country-pop artist.
Her official biography describes a career that has included performances alongside artists such as Carrie Underwood, Sam Hunt, Dustin Lynch, Lee Brice, Walker Hayes and Ashley McBryde.
She also gained recognition from major country-industry organizations.
Miller has been named a “Next Up Now” artist by CMT and a “One to Watch” by the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
Her independently released music has helped build an audience across both traditional country and social media.
One of her best-known songs, “When I Say I Do Today,” became particularly popular online and was used in wedding and proposal videos.
Miller Still Credits Trainor for the Turning Point
Looking back, Miller doesn’t describe Trainor’s social-media post as simply another celebrity interaction.
She sees it as the moment that opened a door she had not even known she wanted to walk through.
The unexpected attention gave her enough momentum to explore music seriously.
What started as YouTube covers posted between acting auditions eventually became a professional country-music career.
And Miller’s story shows how quickly a single social-media interaction can change an artist’s trajectory.
