Indonesia Selects ‘Four Seasons in Java’ as Its 2027 Oscars International Feature Entry
Indonesia has selected Kamila Andini’s “Four Seasons in Java” (“Empat Musim Pertiwi”) as its submission for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
Written and directed by Andini and produced by Ifa Isfansyah for Forka Films, the film stars Putri Marino, Arya Saloka, Christine Hakim and Hana Malasan.
The selection gives Andini another opportunity to represent Indonesia on the international awards circuit after her 2021 film “Yuni” was chosen as the country’s Oscars submission that year.
What Is ‘Four Seasons in Java’ About?
“Four Seasons in Java” follows Pertiwi, played by Putri Marino, a formerly incarcerated woman who returns to her hometown only to discover that she is not welcomed back.
Her return forces her to confront a painful personal history shaped by silence, violence and social division.
The psychological drama combines mystery, magical realism and science fiction as it explores trauma, memory and the difficult process of reclaiming a sense of home and identity.
Andini said the story is about returning not only to a physical place but also to parts of ourselves that have been left behind.
Although the film is deeply rooted in Indonesia, she said its themes of trauma, memory, violence and healing are universal.
Andini described the selection as an honor and said she was grateful that the film would represent Indonesia at the Academy Awards.
Kamila Andini’s Previous Oscars Connection
The selection continues Andini’s growing international profile.
Her 2021 feature “Yuni” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Platform Prize. The film was subsequently selected as Indonesia’s submission for the Oscars.
Andini’s other work has also received major international attention.
Her film “Before, Now & Then” (“Nana”) competed at the Berlin International Film Festival, where Laura Basuki won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance.
“Four Seasons in Java” now becomes another major step in Andini’s international career.
The Film Premiered at Toronto
“Four Seasons in Java” had its world premiere in the Centrepiece program at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film is also scheduled to screen at the Busan International Film Festival next month.
It has already received recognition in the awards circuit, including a Best Cinematography nomination at the 2026 Asian Pacific Screen Awards.
That festival and awards exposure comes ahead of the film’s Indonesian theatrical release.
When Will ‘Four Seasons in Java’ Be Released?
The film is scheduled for a wide theatrical release in Indonesia on October 8.
It will first have a run in selected Indonesian theaters during September before expanding to a wider release in October.
The film’s international festival appearances are expected to continue alongside its theatrical rollout.
An International Co-Production
“Four Seasons in Java” is not solely an Indonesian production.
The film is an international co-production involving Indonesia, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.
Paris-based Goodfellas is handling worldwide sales.
Producer Ifa Isfansyah said the team was proud that the film would represent Indonesia at the Academy Awards.
He described the movie as profoundly Indonesian in its setting and perspective while addressing broader experiences involving trauma, resilience and the search for belonging.
Isfansyah also credited the film’s international partners and supporters for helping it reach audiences beyond Indonesia.
Putri Marino Leads the Cast
Putri Marino plays Pertiwi, the central character whose return home drives the film’s story.
She is joined by Arya Saloka, Christine Hakim and Hana Malasan.
The combination of psychological drama, mystery, magical realism and science fiction gives the film a genre mix that goes beyond a conventional family or social drama.
Its central themes remain focused on memory, trauma, violence, identity and belonging.
Indonesia’s Road to the Oscars
Indonesia’s selection of “Four Seasons in Java” does not itself mean the film has secured an Oscar nomination.
It is the country’s submission for consideration in the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
Films submitted by countries around the world go through the Academy’s international feature selection process before the final nominees are announced.
For Andini, however, the selection represents another international milestone following the journey of “Yuni” and the festival success of “Before, Now & Then.”
With its Toronto premiere, upcoming Busan screening and Asian Pacific Screen Awards recognition, “Four Seasons in Java” now enters the next stage of its awards-season journey as Indonesia’s official international feature submission.
