Federal agents seized an estimated 204,000 fentanyl pills in two separate Utah investigations within one week, leading to federal charges against two men accused of possessing the drug with intent to distribute.
Federal authorities in Utah seized approximately 204,000 fentanyl pills in two separate and unrelated cases during a single week, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.
The seizures occurred on August 11 and August 12, 2026, as the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force investigated separate suspected drug-trafficking operations.
Two seizures, more than 200,000 pills
In the first case, federal agents searched a vehicle, residence and storage unit in West Valley City on August 11. Authorities said they recovered approximately 9,351 grams of fentanyl from the storage unit, which investigators estimated represented about 93,000 fentanyl pills.
Agents also reported finding fentanyl, methamphetamine, U.S. currency and a suspected drug ledger during the searches.
The investigation resulted in charges against Jesus Alexis Cecena Cota, 22, who authorities allege was involved with a drug-trafficking organization distributing fentanyl and other narcotics in Utah.
The second seizure occurred the following day.
After a controlled purchase of fentanyl, investigators obtained a search warrant for a hotel room in Salt Lake County. Authorities said they found approximately 11,160 grams of fentanyl, estimated at roughly 111,000 pills.
Ricardo Verduzco Bernal, 54, was arrested in connection with that case.
The two investigations are separate and unrelated, according to federal prosecutors.
Federal charges filed
Cota and Bernal were charged in separate cases with possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute.
Cota’s jury trial is scheduled for August 27, while Bernal’s trial is scheduled for August 26, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The cases are being investigated by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force, with assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Why the seizures stand out
The combined seizures represent one of the largest recent fentanyl seizures highlighted by federal authorities in Utah, with investigators estimating the recovered drugs at more than 200,000 individual pills.
The cases also show how separate investigations can uncover large quantities of fentanyl through different enforcement methods, including searches and controlled purchases.
Federal prosecutors said the investigations are part of broader efforts under Project Safe Neighborhoods and Operation Take Back America to target serious drug trafficking and public-safety threats.
For now, the cases will move through federal court, where prosecutors will have to prove the allegations against each defendant.
