Curry died at his home in Los Angeles, according to his longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz, who confirmed his death to The Associated Press. No cause of death was disclosed.
For generations of viewers, Curry was inseparable from Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the eccentric scientist he played in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. But his career went far beyond that single role. He appeared on Broadway, worked extensively in British and American theater, played Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, and became a prolific voice actor.
A career that began on the London stage
Curry was born in Cheshire, England, in 1946. His father was a Methodist naval chaplain, and Curry later studied drama and English at the University of Birmingham.
His professional career began in London’s West End with the musical Hair. From there, he moved into more demanding theater work, including productions connected with the Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Theater remained an important part of Curry’s career even after he became internationally famous. His stage credits included Tom Stoppard’s Travesties and Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus. He also played King Arthur in the Broadway musical Spamalot, earning one of his three Tony Award nominations.
His other Tony nominations came for My Favorite Year and Amadeus. He also received an Emmy nomination during his television career.
The role that changed everything
Curry’s breakthrough came in 1973 when he was cast as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the original London production of The Rocky Horror Show.
The musical eventually moved to Los Angeles and Broadway before becoming the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Curry reprised his role for the movie, creating one of the most recognizable performances of his career.
The movie initially struggled to find a mainstream audience but eventually developed an extraordinary cult following. Midnight screenings, audience participation and repeated theatrical showings helped turn Rocky Horror into a lasting pop-culture phenomenon.
Curry’s performance was central to that transformation. His Frank-N-Furter combined theatricality, humor and menace, making the character one of the defining figures of the film.
The role also remained connected to Curry throughout his later career. In 2016, he appeared as the narrator in the television remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.
From Pennywise to Wadsworth
Curry repeatedly demonstrated that he could move between very different kinds of characters.
In 1990, he played Pennywise in the television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It. The role introduced his performance to a new generation of viewers and became another defining part of his screen legacy.
He also played Wadsworth, the highly proper but increasingly frantic butler, in the 1985 comedy Clue. The movie later developed its own cult following.
Other notable screen roles included the concierge in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Darkness in Ridley Scott’s Legend, Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island.
That range was one of Curry’s defining characteristics. He could play a flamboyant theatrical figure in one project and a frightening villain or comic supporting character in another.
Curry became a major voice actor
Curry’s career also expanded into animation and voice work.
He provided voices for numerous television programs, films, audiobooks and video games. Among his better-known animated roles was Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys. He also voiced characters in productions including Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.
Voice acting became particularly important later in his career, allowing him to continue performing across television and other media.
His official biography notes that he also received an Emmy for his voice work as Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates.
A stroke changed the later part of his career
Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012 and subsequently used a wheelchair. His ability to work changed considerably, but he did not disappear from the entertainment world.
He continued with voice work and occasional appearances. In 2016, he returned to the Rocky Horror universe as the Criminologist in the television production. He also participated in later readings and fan events.
In 2024, Curry appeared in the horror film Stream, marking a return to a live-action film role after a lengthy break.
His connection with fans also remained important. In his 2025 memoir, Vagabond, Curry reflected on his career, his characters and the experiences that persuaded him to tell his story.
More than Frank-N-Furter
Although Frank-N-Furter remained Curry’s most famous character, reducing his career to Rocky Horror overlooks the breadth of his work.
He was equally comfortable on stage, in television, in mainstream Hollywood movies and behind a microphone. His performances often involved exaggerated or unusual characters, but Curry brought a distinct voice and personality to each of them.
His theater career was particularly significant. Beyond Rocky Horror, he worked on productions of Travesties, Amadeus, The Threepenny Opera, My Favorite Year and Spamalot. His official biography records a career that repeatedly moved between British theater, Broadway, film and television.
