Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have returned to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for an extended period this autumn.
The move is not being described as a permanent relocation. The couple are keeping their homes in California and Portugal. But their return has immediately renewed attention on Harry’s relationship with his estranged brother, Prince William.
William has remained silent
Harry and William are now living geographically closer than they have been for years.
Yet there has been no public response from William to Harry’s return.
The brothers’ relationship has remained strained since Harry stepped back from royal duties and later discussed family tensions publicly.
They have had only limited public contact in recent years, including Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022, King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023 and a memorial service for Lord Robert Fellowes in August 2024.
Could Diana bring them together?
This is where the story could become even more significant.
Diana’s 30th death anniversary falls on August 31, 2027, and royal biographer Robert Jobson believes the milestone could create an unavoidable moment for Harry and William to appear together.
Jobson told Hello! that there would have to be some form of arrangement around the anniversary and suggested the brothers could ultimately find themselves on the same stage.
But that does not mean a reconciliation is confirmed.
Harry has also increasingly focused on his mother’s legacy, including work connected to landmine charities in Angola, where Diana famously campaigned against landmines.
Jobson believes Harry’s continued association with Diana’s legacy could become another source of tension with William.
Harry’s return creates another pressure point
Royal biographer Katie Nicholl has described the situation as potentially difficult for William because Harry is now physically much closer to the royal family.
Security is another major issue.
Harry has spent years challenging decisions surrounding his family’s UK security arrangements. Reports indicate that a current assessment of security threats is moving forward, although the issue remains unresolved publicly.
The biggest question now
Harry and Meghan’s UK stay could therefore become much more than a family move.
It brings Harry physically closer to his father and brother, puts his children closer to the UK royal environment and raises fresh questions about whether he can build a new life in Britain without fully returning to royal duties.
And then there is Diana’s anniversary.
The real question is no longer simply why Harry came back. It is whether being back in the UK makes a future Harry-William reunion harder to avoid.
