The live-action remake, which stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, opened in theaters on July 10. Disney’s official movie page lists the film as a PG-rated, 1-hour-55-minute live-action adventure directed by Thomas Kail, best known for “Hamilton.”

The live-action “Moana” will be available to buy digitally on Sept. 8, 2026.

That release will include:

The SteelBook edition features Lagaʻaia and Johnson as Moana and Maui, alongside Pua and Heihei.
WDW News Today also reported the Sept. 8 digital and Oct. 6 physical release dates after Disney Studios announced the dates on Sept. 1.

Will there be a Moana three-film collection?
Yes.
Disney will also release a three-film collection containing the live-action “Moana,” the original 2016 animated “Moana” and “Moana 2.”
The collection is scheduled to become available digitally on Sept. 8 and on DVD on Oct. 6.
Who stars in the live-action Moana?
The cast includes:
- Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana
- Dwayne Johnson as Maui
- Rena Owen as Gramma Tala
- John Tui as Chief Tui
- Frankie Adams as Sina
Lagaʻaia takes over the title role from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films. Johnson returns as Maui after playing the character in the original “Moana” and “Moana 2.” Disney confirms Lagaʻaia and Johnson as the leads in the 2026 adaptation.
What is the live-action Moana about?
The story follows Moana, a young voyager from Motunui who answers the call of the Ocean and travels beyond the reef to help restore prosperity to her people.
She joins forces with Maui, the shape-shifting demigod, on an adventure that brings the familiar animated story into a live-action setting.
Disney released the movie theatrically on July 10, 2026 in the U.S.
Moana’s home release follows a disappointing box-office run
The home-video announcement comes after the live-action remake delivered a weaker theatrical performance than Disney’s previous “Moana” films.
According to the reports supplied for this release, the live-action film earned about $315 million worldwide, while the original 2016 animated “Moana” grossed roughly $684 million worldwide. “Moana 2,” released in 2024, crossed the $1 billion mark.
The live-action film opened to about $43.1 million domestically, according to Variety’s report.
Despite the box-office performance, the movie received a stronger audience response than its critics’ score. WDW News Today reports a 32% critics score and 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 42/100 Metacritic score and an A- CinemaScore.
Is Moana coming to Disney+?
Disney has not announced a Disney+ streaming date in the release information available so far.
The Sept. 8 date is for the film’s digital home release, while the physical 4K, Blu-ray and DVD editions arrive Oct. 6.
Disney’s current official movie page still identifies “Moana” as its 2026 live-action theatrical release.
