That puts Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man movie roughly $773,000 ahead of The Force Awakens, which had held the domestic record with about $936 million.
The comparison comes with an important caveat: older box-office records can look different when adjusted for inflation. Still, on the reported unadjusted domestic totals, Brand New Day now sits at the top.
Spider-Man Passes The Force Awakens
The domestic milestone gives Spider-Man: Brand New Day another major record after a remarkably fast run at the box office.
The movie opened to approximately $360 million in North America and generated around $932 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
It then crossed $1 billion worldwide in only six days.
The film reached another major milestone after three weekends, passing $2 billion globally. Variety reported that it became the second-fastest movie ever to reach $2 billion, behind Avengers: Endgame, which reached the milestone in 11 days.

The next enormous milestone would be $1 billion at the North American box office.
Brand New Day is already at $936.773 million, meaning it needs roughly another $63.2 million to reach that mark.
However, after 47 days in theaters, the pace required to close that gap could be difficult through the initial theatrical run alone.
Variety and IGN both note that a re-release could be necessary for the film to reach $1 billion domestically.

Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman has described the movie in unusually human terms.
Rather than viewing it only as another superhero adventure, Rothman characterized Brand New Day as essentially being about “a lonely guy.”
He described it as “not so much a superhero film, but a super-person film.”
The movie still contains the large-scale action expected from a Spider-Man film, but Rothman said its broader appeal comes from themes including friendship, humanity, emotion and relatability.

Marvel’s next major crossover project, Avengers: Doomsday, is scheduled for December and is expected to bring together a large group of superheroes.
