What Is ‘Up Against It’ About?
Banderas plays Álvaro, while Birthistle plays Saffron, a couple whose relationship has already broken down.
Their daughter Rose is seriously ill, and her oncologist tells them that she may need a sibling who could potentially become a donor.
The situation forces Álvaro and Saffron back into each other’s lives. They must confront their hostility and consider having another child despite the personal history between them.
Trudie Styler’s Personal Connection to the Story
Styler said she had been considering the screenplay for years and was involved in developing it, including moving the story’s setting from the United States to the United Kingdom.
The hospital setting also had a personal connection for her. Both of Styler’s sisters are nurses, giving her a close understanding of the emotional demands faced by medical workers and families dealing with serious illness.
Styler said nursing can be a calling, particularly when caring for families going through their most difficult moments.
Why the Film Uses Humor
Despite its subject, Up Against It is not designed as an entirely bleak medical drama.
Banderas said the characters carry a sense of responsibility, but the story avoids becoming overly solemn because humor can appear even during painful circumstances.
Much of that humor comes from the relationship between Álvaro and Saffron as they gradually begin to soften toward each other.
Birthistle sees humor as a way of coping with situations that could otherwise become overwhelming.
Saffron also tries to remain positive around Rose, hiding the depth of her fear from her daughter. Birthistle suggested that once Saffron is alone, the emotions she suppresses in public could come out in much harsher ways.
A Story About the Parents, Too
The film keeps Rose’s illness at the center of the story, but it also spends significant time examining the relationship between her parents.
Álvaro and Saffron believe they hate each other after their breakup. As the story develops, however, that certainty begins to change.
Their daughter’s condition forces them to reconsider what remains between them and whether their relationship can be repaired, at least temporarily.
Styler Returns to Directing
Styler is better known for her work as a producer than as a director.
Her previous feature as a director was the 2017 film Freak Show. With Up Against It, she said her long involvement with the material gave her confidence to take control of the film.
She also brought that producing experience to her work with the cast, presenting Banderas and Birthistle with the broader arcs of their characters while allowing them room to shape the performances.

Banderas and Styler had known each other for years before the production, while Birthistle was a newer acquaintance when she joined the project close to the start of filming.
Styler said the two actors quickly understood each other as performers and brought their own experiences into the roles.
For Banderas, the challenge was to balance the seriousness of the family crisis with the humor and emotional complications of the couple’s relationship.
Birthistle, known in part for Bad Sisters, approached Saffron as a mother who has little choice but to remain strong for her daughter.
