Nepal could need $4 billion to $5 billion to rebuild after devastating floods struck border areas this week, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle told Reuters on Saturday.
Wagle stressed that the figure is only an initial estimate, with the government still assessing the scale of the damage and losses.
“This is just an estimate. Loss and damage is being assessed,” Wagle said.
Damage assessment is still underway
The estimated reconstruction bill gives an early indication of the financial challenge facing Nepal as authorities begin assessing damaged infrastructure and communities.
The floods have caused significant destruction in affected areas, including damage to buildings and other infrastructure.
However, the final cost could change as authorities complete their assessment.
Why the $4–5 billion estimate matters
For Nepal, the reconstruction figure represents a major financial burden that could require substantial public spending and outside support.
The government will need to determine the full extent of the damage before establishing a more precise rebuilding plan.
For now, the $4 billion to $5 billion estimate should not be treated as a final reconstruction cost.
