Under Salt Marsh Season 2 Confirmed: Rafe Spall Returns as Detective Eric Bull in a New Scottish Mystery

Sky has renewed Under Salt Marsh for a six-part second chapter, with Rafe Spall returning as Detective Eric Bull — but the crime drama is leaving its Welsh setting behind for a new mystery in Scotland.

Under Salt Marsh is officially returning for another chapter, but viewers should not expect the same setting when the crime drama comes back.

Sky has commissioned a second six-part installment of the series, with Rafe Spall reprising his role as Detective Eric Bull. The new chapter will take Bull away from the fictional Welsh village of Morfa Halen and place him in a remote Scottish mining community.

The change gives the series a new location, a new group of characters and a fresh murder investigation while keeping Bull at the centre of the story.

A New Case for Eric Bull

According to Sky, the second chapter follows Bull as he moves to a remote Scottish mining village where a murder investigation begins to expose long-hidden secrets.

The case will also have a personal dimension for the detective.

As Bull investigates the killing, he is expected to move closer to the truth about his own past, giving the new story a connection to the character beyond the central mystery.

The second installment does not yet have an official title.

Why the Setting Is Changing

The move from Wales to Scotland is one of the biggest changes coming with the new chapter.

The first season was set in the fictional North Wales community of Morfa Halen, while filming took place in Wales. The new story instead heads to Scotland, where the landscape of a remote mining village will become an important part of the drama.

That shift also allows creator Claire Oakley to build a different community around Bull rather than simply extending the first season’s storyline.

Oakley, who created, wrote and directed the original series, is returning for the new chapter. She will write the season with In-Sook Chappell, Jonathan Harbottle and Scott Graham.

The First Season Was a Major Sky Success

The renewal follows a strong launch for Under Salt Marsh.

The series premiered in January 2026 and became Sky’s biggest original drama launch since The Day of the Jackal. It also became the company’s biggest entertainment title of the year to that point, reaching a reported 28-day audience of 2.5 million.

The first season starred Spall alongside Kelly Reilly and centred on the discovery of a student’s body during an approaching storm.

That investigation became connected to an older unresolved case involving the disappearance of a young woman, creating the mystery that drove the first six episodes.

What We Know About Season 2

Sky has confirmed that the new chapter will again consist of six episodes.

Spall will return as Eric Bull, while Oakley remains involved as creator, writer and director. Zoranna Piggott is the series producer.

Little Door Productions is producing the drama in association with Sky Studios.

The production team has not yet announced the full returning cast or the release date. Filming is expected to begin in Scotland in 2027.

That means viewers are likely to have a wait before Bull’s next investigation reaches screens.

A Fresh Mystery, Not Just a Continuation

The renewal is significant because Under Salt Marsh is not simply returning to continue the same investigation.

Instead, Bull is being placed in a completely different environment with a new community and another murder mystery.

For Oakley, that creates room to expand the world of the drama while developing the detective’s personal story further.

Sky’s Meghan Lyvers said the first series had connected strongly with audiences and praised Oakley’s ability to create distinctive characters and a strong sense of place.

With Spall returning, the new chapter will retain the central character that viewers already know while giving the show a substantially different backdrop.

For now, the biggest unanswered questions are the identity of Bull’s new castmates, the details of the Scottish murder case and when the second chapter will premiere.
