American Horror Story is bringing back some of its most recognizable stars for season 13, with Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters returning to the anthology series.
The new season premieres Sept. 24, 2026, and is being positioned as a reunion of characters from across the show’s history rather than a conventional standalone chapter.

Why Season 13 is different
The biggest change is the return of characters viewers have already seen.
Unlike the show’s usual approach, in which actors frequently return as entirely different characters, season 13 brings several familiar faces back to their established roles.
Ryan Murphy has described the installment as a tribute to the series’ previous seasons.
He told The Hollywood Reporter that bringing the longtime cast together felt like reuniting a band, with performers quickly slipping back into characters they had played years earlier.
Jessica Lange makes her major return
Jessica Lange is at the center of the reunion.
Lange originally starred in the first four seasons of American Horror Story, playing four major characters: Constance Langdon, Sister Jude Martin, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars.
She later made a brief appearance as Constance in Apocalypse, but season 13 represents her first major return to the series since Freak Show.
Murphy has said that getting Lange back was crucial to the new season.
He told The Hollywood Reporter that he had expected her to decline when he approached her. According to Murphy, he may not have made the season had she refused.
Sarah Paulson is returning too
Sarah Paulson is another major part of the season 13 reunion.
Across the earlier seasons, Paulson played numerous characters, including Lana Winters, Cordelia Goode, Bette and Dot Tattler, Sally McKenna, Audrey Tindall, Ally Mayfair-Richards, Wilhemina Venable, Tuberculosis Karen and Mamie Eisenhower.
The season 13 trailer shows several of those characters returning.
People reported that Paulson will revisit six of her previous roles, while Murphy has described the number as potentially six or seven.
Evan Peters returns as multiple characters
Evan Peters is also taking on several of his most recognizable AHS roles.
His previous characters include Tate Langdon, Kit Walker, Kyle Spencer, Jimmy Darling, James Patrick March, Rory Monahan, Kai Anderson, Austin Sommers and others.
The season 13 trailer specifically features Peters as Tate Langdon, James Patrick March and Kai Anderson.
Peters previously said the new season made him anxious because of the expectations surrounding the large reunion.
More familiar faces are coming back
The returning cast extends well beyond Lange, Paulson and Peters.
Season 13 includes Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, John Carroll Lynch, Jamie Brewer, Frances Conroy and Mena Suvari, among other AHS veterans.
Several of the actors have played multiple characters throughout the anthology’s first 12 seasons.
The season therefore works as a large-scale reunion rather than focusing on one previous installment.
New actors join the AHS universe
The season also introduces several newcomers to the franchise.
The cast includes Paul Anthony Kelly, John Waters, Alex Consani, Avantika Vandanapu and Joey Pollari, among others.
Cara Delevingne, Madelaine Petsch and Orlando Jones are also part of the newly expanded cast, according to the reported season 13 lineup.
Jones takes over the role of Papa Legba, previously played by the late Lance Reddick.
What is Season 13 about?
FX has not released a full official synopsis explaining the season’s story.
Its teaser instead asks which familiar horrors will return and what new threats will emerge.
The promotional material has a strong connection to the show’s witchcraft mythology, but Murphy has ruled out another straightforward Coven season.
Instead, characters and elements from different parts of the AHS universe are being brought together.
Murphy has said that the characters ultimately unite against an “ultimate evil.”
Exactly how those storylines connect remains one of the season’s biggest unanswered questions.
The first trailer brings back familiar faces
The first official trailer arrived on Sept. 10.
It immediately emphasizes the show’s history, opening with Lange’s Freak Show character Elsa Mars.
Peters appears as James Patrick March from Hotel, while Paulson’s Cordelia Goode from Coven senses that a new danger is approaching.
